Shinnen Enkai is JCSM’s annual formal New Year’s banquet where beautiful kimonos and hakamas are on display, worn by guests. Traditional sake is served to welcome you and Japanese dances and other performances are lined up to entertain the crowd. This is always a sold-out event, which is also the organization’s biggest fundraiser of the year. Silent auction is available, as well as raffle drawings. At the Shinnen Enkai, the JCS Board and Officers are also installed during a biennial year.

Perhaps the highlight of Shinnen Enkai is honoring individuals in the community who have dedicated their lives to helping perpetuate the Japanese Culture or those who have shown excellence and contributions to the Japanese arts and/or culture and for their selflessness in sharing their talents with the community. These individuals were nominated and selected recipients of the prestigious Nihon Bunka Awards. If you have a person you’d like to nominate for this honor, contact jcsmhawaii@gmail.com.

Nihon Bunka awardees are lifetime members of the Japanese Cultural Society of Maui.
