On Dec. 12, 2017, JCSM held a Zen Dinner Cooking Class. Participants brought their own knives, aprons and cutting boards and learned about shorin ryori – vegetarian way of cooking. Of course, participants got to enjoy the meal right after.
Zen vegetarian cuisine is the basis of Japanese cooking. Participants learned cooking techniques and use of local fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables that enhance the subtle flavors of each ingredient. The class had a demonstration on table manners and learned the Zen way of eating during the meal course.
We thank instructor Naoko Moller for teaching us. Naoko is a Japanese cooking connoisseur, an ESL Educator and was born in a Zen Buddhist temple in
Niigata, Japan, raised in Hawaii and in Japan at Zen Buddhist temples.
