JCSM invitees you to join us to learn Sashiko: the ancient Japanese art of decorative stitching and mending. Sashiko, or “little stabs”, began in the Edo period in the Aomori Prefecture of Japan as a method farmers and fishermen used to mend and reinforce garments. As with many other art forms of Japan, it evolved from its practical roots into its own artistic pursuit.

Elisa Suetake
Instructor
Elisa Suetake is a member of the JCSM board of directors and a multi-faceted artist. She began learning to sew and knit with her Obaachan as a child during her visits to Jifuku in Yamaguchi Prefecture of Japan. Elisa has been working in the textile and fiber arts for most of her life, with Sashiko being one of her more recent interests.
